Some things you need to know
Are you needing help with your tenancy?
Kāinga Tau previously known as Sustaining Tenancies was a support programme for our whānau most at risk of losing their tenancy but has now been extended to include all whānau in a Residential Tenancy. We acknowledge that at times renting can be tough. It’s your home but not your home and many of our whānau are worried with the housing crisis of where they will go, or what will happen to them if they speak up.
Our programme is focused on making renting better for everyone.
From advocacy to education around your rights as a tenant we can support you, we provide:
- free advice on your responsibilities and rights as a tenant under the Residential Tenancy Act
- assistance with Tenancy complaints and problems
- outline the Tenancy Tribunal process, and or go with you to Tribunal
- support you in fulfilling your obligations as a Tenant
- provide Tenancy Education programmes
- help with Healthy Homes standards

How does the Kāinga Tau service work?
Step 1. Register online or complete a referral form and return to us at heiwikainga@tst.maori.nz
Step 2. Our Kāinga Tau Coach will be in touch to assess your needs and ensure the programme is right for you.
Step 3. We will then set up a hui to identify the level of support you require. The assessment helps us with finding the best services and support needed by the whānau.
Step 4. Once the assessment has been completed, a whānau plan will be developed. This plan will record what’s required and where we can help you.
Step 5. The plan will record who will take which actions. We will also record your progress and your feelings towards the programme for quality improvement purposes.
Step 6. Aim to reach the whānau goals and sustain the tenancy.
