He Iwi Kāinga and the Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust do not directly fund housing builds. However, we are committed to supporting your housing initiatives by providing guidance and assistance in preparing external funding applications.

Our team is dedicated to helping you navigate the funding landscape, offering insight, and facilitating the application process to enhance your chances of securing external funding for your housing developments.

Engaging with your whānau/hapū is crucial to achieving your goal of a Papakāinga development.

He Iwi Kaīnga have developed a number of tools to help you to host wānanga and explore your moemoea and ensure everyone is on the same page moving forward. Having as many whānau as possible involved in developing your vision will ensure your papakāinga development is successful and sustainable for generations to come.

The journey to develop a Papakaīnga requires a wealth of expertise and technical advice.

Navigating this process can be complex, but these experts play important roles in ensuring a successful Papakaīnga development.

• Engineer – to provide a geotechnical report showing whether the whenua is suitable for development.
• Planner – to confirm the necessity for resource consent and handles the application process.
• Architect/ Architectual Designer – to draw the plans showing the site layout and building details.
• Project Manager – provides oversight and manages the housing development process.

We can help you to engage and have available a list of providers who can help in these spaces.

In the Taupō and Tūrangi rohe, our community is served by both the Taupō District Council and the Waikato Regional Council.

Beyond managing the everyday necessities such as roading, water supply, stormwater and wastewater management, these councils serve as valuable sources of information for land planning. Planning information details for your whenua can include:

• hazards such as flooding or land stability.
• roads and access.
• waahi tapu, cultural or heritage features.
• where existing services are
• zoning information such as building setbacks, height and vehicle restrictions.

When considering your Papakāinga development, engaging with councils to seek consents will also become crucial as you may need:

Building Consents – a building consent is a formal acknowledgement of your building work’s safety and compliance with technical standards. You will need a building consent for any new homes exceeding 30sqm, other communal buildings or any additions you wish to build.

Resource Consents – A resource consent may be required from the Waikato Regional Council. A resource consent is a formal approval granted to breach or deviation of a rule in a plan. Each district and region have plans outlining permissible activities and the need for resource consents.

Development Contributions – Development contributions may also be payable for papakāinga development as a contribution towards infrastructure such as roads, and community facilities like parks.
